Bard ushers Google into the era of artificial intelligence.

The IT business declared that it will allow users to test out its experimental discussion service.

The company's CEO, Sundar Pichai, said in a statement that the experimental discussion service will first  "trusted testers" before being made available to a larger audience.

The word is an English translation of the mediaeval troubadour poet known as a bard, also the appellation given to the English playwright William Shakespeare.

Bard can be, in Pichai's words, "an outlet for creativity and a launch pad for inquiry" based on data obtained from the internet by artificial intelligence.

That implies the gadget will be able to discuss the best football strikers for anyone or explain fresh discoveries from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old.

Pichai has been funding initiatives for the past six years, such as the "Language Model for Dialog Applications" system (LaMDA),
